George L. Custer, 84, of Alliance left this life, Sunday, January 1st, 2012 at McCrea Manor, following a long illness.
George was born in Bayard, OH on August 27, 1927, the son of the late Harold R. and Wilma (Howlett) Custer.
He graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and served his apprenticeship at Rutledge-Jackson Funeral Home in Minerva where he then worked for seven years. George continued his career at Cassady-Turkle Funeral Home in Alliance for nineteen years and Myers-Israel Funeral Home in Alliance for eighteen years. After Myers-Israel closed, he returned to Cassady-Turkle-Christian, retiring after six years. He also worked for the former Alliance Manufacturing as a security guard.
George served as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy during WW II and was recalled during the Korean War. He was a 50 year member of Christ United Methodist Church, in Alliance.
George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mamie E. (Moser) Custer; two daughters, Pamela K Taylor of Cleveland, Cynthia M. (Blaise) Codispoti of Uniontown; two sons Keith E. (Sandy) Custer of Perrysburg, OH., Dean B. (Sonya) Custer of Alliance; grandchildren Joel B. Custer, Mary C. Kutscher, Anthony J. Codispoti, Brian L. Custer, Bradley D. Custer, Betsy E. Custer, Paige K. Taylor; great-granddaughter Cadence Linn; a sister, Charlotte C. (Frank) Rhome of Alliance; and a brother, Charles A. (Juanita) Custer of Minerva. He is preceded in death by a grandson Tyler B. Custer, and a brother Richard L. Custer
Funeral Services will be held at the Bartley Funeral Home, Minerva at noon on Thursday, January 5th, 2012 with Pastor Larry Karlan officiating. Calling hours will be held Thursday, 10 a.m. until noon. at the Bartley Funeral Home. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.
