Obituary

Violet "Faye" Elder
89, a longtime resident of Minerva, Ohio, passed away on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at Sundale Nursing Home in Morgantown, W.Va. Faye was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Bladen, Ohio, the second of five daughters of Francis and Rhoda Worthington. She graduated valedictorian of her class at Racine (Ohio) High School, and from Bliss Business College in Columbus, Ohio. She married her husband, James on March 25, 1943. They spent most of their lives in Minerva where they raised two daughters. Faye served as secretary for the Minerva United Methodist Church for a number of years, and then took a position with Midland Buckeye Savings and Loan where she was employed until her retirement in 1982. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women, and after her retirement volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Besides her love of reading and the music of the Statler Brothers, Faye was an avid sports fan, especially of football and basketball. She could usually tell you about the records of her favorite college teams, the Ohio State Buckeyes and the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Faye is survived by her daughters, Susan (husband, Ronald) Lewis of Morgantown, W.Va., and Kathy (husband, James) Cantrell of Surf City, N.C.; grandchildren, James (wife, Dawn) Ellis of Hampstead, N.C., Rebecca Ellis of Mexico City, Jennifer (husband, James) Lewis Phelps of Oxford, Fla.; and great-grandson, Hiatt Ellis of Hampstead, N.C.; two sisters, Mabel Frazier of Columbus, Ohio, and Gloria Wagner of Racine, Ohio also survive. Faye was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James in 1995; infant daughter, Mary Lynn; and sisters, Beryl Rowley, and Jean Cecil.
Funeral services will take place at Bartley Funeral Home in Minerva at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19 with Rev. Kerry King officiating. Calling hours will precede the service, beginning at noon. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Minerva Community Meals on Wheels or the Minerva United Methodist Church.
