William Lucian Hawk, Sr., 89, of Minerva passed away Sunday, May 6th, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
BIll was born in Carrollton, OH on July 2, 1922, the son of the late Robert D and Mary (Gantz) Hawk He spent his childhood in Carrolton with his sister Nina Mae.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a 2nd Cl. Motor Machinist Mate in WW II in the Pacific - Phillippines Liberation participating in fourteen invasions.
He was a member of Minerva United Methodist Church, Carroll County Vets, a Life Member of the American Legion, Past President of the Stark County Chapter of the Ohio Association of Chief's of Police, F. O. P., Stark County Police Chiefs. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, boating and spending time with his family.
He worked as a welder at Republic Steel before coming to Minerva in 1954 as a patrolman with the Minerva Police Department. In a short period of time he was promoted to Captain and then Chief, reitiring in 1983.
He received the Mayor's Citation from the City of Canton for his dedication and service during the Professional Football Hall of Fame, Mayor's Citation from the City of Canton upon his retirement, A VFW Citation of Appreciation for service, and was a founding member of the National Law Enforecement Museum in Washington, D.C. Mayor Dick Mount declared March 28, 1983, "Bill Hawk Day."
Bill provided a watchful eye over Johnny Cash and his family when they visited Minerva. During the years they became good friends with Johnny sending him a gift upon Bill's retirement.
William is survived by his wife Betty Jean (Nichols) Hawk; two daughters, Judy L. (James) Gram of Minerva, OH; Sheri J. (Rick) Armes of Paris, OH; two sons Jerry A. (Susan) Hawk of Minerva, OH., William L. (Susan) Hawk Jr. of Alliance, OH; a step daughter, Rhonda A. Mitchell of Spiro, Oklahoma; a sister, Nina M. Sheldon of Carrollton, OH; grandchildren Jerry (Hether) Hawk II, Jennifer (Richard) Waugh, Michelle Kurzinsky, Billie Jo Hawk, Valerie (Jody) Loper, Steffany (Mathias) Locklear, Joshua Burchett; step-grandchildren Annissa Mitchell, Brandi Mitchell, Shelby (James) Whatley; fifteen great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; three great-great grandchildren
He is preceded in death by one grandchild.
Following cremation, private services will be held at the convenience of family.
